چکیده

We have studied the poor southern cluster of galaxies S639. Based on new Strömgren photometry of stars in the direction of the cluster we confirm that the galactic extinction affecting the cluster is large. We find the extinction in Johnson B to be AB = 0.75± 0.03. We have obtained new photometry in Gunn r for E and S0 galaxies in the cluster. If the Fundamental Plane is used for determination of the relative distance and the peculiar velocity of the cluster we find a distance, in velocity units, of (5706± 350)km s, and a substantial peculiar velocity, (839± 350)km s. However, the colors and the absorption line indices of the E and S0 galaxies indicate that the stellar populations in these galaxies are different from those in similar galaxies in the two rich clusters Coma and HydraI. This difference may severely affect the distance determination and the derived peculiar velocity. The data are consistent with a nonsignificant peculiar velocity for S639 and the galaxies in the cluster being on average 0.2 dex younger than similar galaxies in Coma and HydraI. The results for S639 caution that some large peculiar velocities may be spurious and caused by unusual stellar populations.

Globular Clusters and the Halos of Dwarf Galaxies

Many dwarf galaxies have disproportionately rich globular cluster (GC) systems for their luminosities. Moreover, the GCs tend to be preferentially associated with the most metal-poor stellar populations in their parent galaxies, making them attractive tracers of the halos of dwarf (and larger) galaxies. In this contribution, I briefly discuss some constraints on cluster disruption obtained from...

Alignments of the Dominant Galaxies in Poor Clusters

We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding distribution of nearby (≤ 20 h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible for dominant galaxy ...

Another X - ray – Discovered Poor Cluster of Galaxies Associated with CL 0016 + 16 1

We report optical spectroscopic observations of RX J0018.8+1602, a ROSAT X-ray source proposed to be an intermediate redshift cluster of galaxies. Our observations confirm the identification of RX J0018.8+1602 and provide measurements of its mean radial velocity (z = 0.5406 ± 0.0006) and velocity dispersion (σp = 200 +110 −80 km s ). This is the second poor cluster that has been found to be a c...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

The Dynamics of Poor Systems of Galaxies

We assemble and observe a sample of poor galaxy systems that is suitable for testing N-body simulations of hierarchical clustering (Navarro, Frenk, & White 1997; NFW) and other dynamical halo models (e.g., Hernquist 1990). We (1) determine the parameters of the density profile ρ(r) and the velocity dispersion profile σp(R), (2) separate emission-line galaxies from absorption-line galaxies, exam...
